What to do in Udine
We recommend that you start your visit from Piazza Primo Maggio, where it is very convenient to leave your car. From Piazza Primo Maggio visit the basilica of Santa Maria delle Grazie and don’t forget to admire the devil’s mask! Piazza Libertà is undoubtedly the most beautiful square in the city. You can admire the Lionello loggia, the portico of San Giovanni with the Moors who strike the hours, the sculptures with the lion of San Marco, Hercules and Caco and the statue of Peace and Justice. Crossing the Bollani arch you can walk towards the second climb that leads to the top of the castle.
On the castle hill you can visit the castle with its city museums, the small church of Santa Maria in Castello, enjoy a splendid view over the city and have an aperitif at the Casa della Contadinanza.
Back in the historic center you can choose to go shopping in via Mercato Vecchio or Via Canciani, visit the cathedral or visit the Casa Cavazzini Museum with its remarkable permanent exhibitions.
If you opt for Via Mercato Vecchio sooner or later you will arrive in the splendid Piazza San Giacomo (or Piazza Matteotti and formerly Piazza delle Erbe). In addition to the homonymous church of San Giacomo, this square also overlooks numerous sixteenth-century buildings, on which it is still possible to admire the ancient frescoes. Numerous bars and cafes open up on Piazza San Giacomo, where you can have an aperitif or a coffee outdoors in good weather.
